Long
English Christening
Gown with Ayrshire Embroidery
c.1870
What
an exquisite masterpiece of hand stitching and hand embroidery. Most
notable is the phenomenal Ayrshire hand embroidery on the bodice
and repeated in the symmetrical 8-inch-tall floral design on the center
bottom. Beautifully constructed, immaculate design. The cap
sleeves display more embroidery, two sweet flaps, hemstitching, and a
fluffy confident, cotton ruffle. The fabric is a lovely batiste that
feels like new. Pictures hardly do justice to the delicacy and beauty of
the embroidery design and perfect stitches. Even the narrow waistband
has been adorned with a continuous single line of small French knots.
This gown is long at 44 inches. Every edge is finished with delicate
embroidered scallop teeth. Closes in the back with two adjustable cotton
ties. Superb
condition. #U1132. SOLD
